Kindergarten Camp was a three-day experience in August designed to ease the transition into school. This introduction gave students the chance to learn routines, explore their school, and make new friends before the year begins.
First-day jitters were commonplace for students across our district last week. But what if it was your first day of school…ever?
For many of our kindergarten students, the first day of school means much more than meeting a new teacher. It means stepping into a building, schedule, and routine that can feel entirely unfamiliar. In mid-August, five Eastmont elementary schools hosted Kindergarten Camp. This three-day experience helped our youngest learners adjust to school by exploring their campus, learning routines through play, and building friendships in a small, supportive setting. The early start builds confidence and prepares students to start kindergarten ready to succeed. By the time the first day arrives, students are more comfortable, and they step into kindergarten ready to lead the way for others.
Angie Velazquez, a kindergarten teacher at Kenroy Elementary, shared a story of success from camp. She described how one shy student entered her classroom “very reserved and quiet,” hesitant to join in with other children. On the first day, Velazquez gently guided her toward toys and activities, and by the second day, she “encouraged her to join in games with others,” staying nearby to provide reassurance. By day three, Angie recalls, “my little friend was able to join her peers and play with a huge smile.” She emphasized that this boost in confidence will carry into the school year: “Once self-confidence is gained, the world is the limit. I am so excited to see her soar in the weeks ahead.”
At Kindergarten Camp, even the shyest students can blossom. By building confidence and a sense of belonging before the first day, Eastmont teachers continue to demonstrate their commitment to creating an environment where every child feels safe, supported, and ready to thrive.
